On Patanjali:

Patanjali: an Ancient Sage for the Modern Age
an interview with Lynne Cardinal by Mary Elford

ME: Lynne, please tell us: who was Patanjali and how did he come to be the author of the vast and sometimes complicated world of the Yog Sūtras?

Lynne Cardinal: Patanjali was a great meditator and a sage who composed the Yog Sūtras (concise aphorisms or verses) a long time ago. He was also known as one of the first Sanskrit grammarians. Some contemporary scholars on the subject of Eastern Philosophy and the ancient Darshans believe that Patanjali could have lived 5,000 BCE. Some others believe that he lived only 2,000 years ago. Yet it has been recently proven through literary and archaeological evidence that the historical beginning of the Yog Sūtras dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE. The Rig-Veda (knowledge of praise) stems in part from the 4th or 5th millennium BCE. Thus we can say that Yoga stretches over 5,000 years as it was inspired by the Rig-Veda and carries the essence of its philosophy. The sūtras where initially taught verbally and memorised by students until the written format was developed.

Each of the Yog Sūtras gives the essence of a philosophical concept. A wide range of thought is compressed or condensed into each one of these sūtras in as few words as possible. This makes it easy to remember them. Sūtras are clues or cryptic aids to memory. The Sūtras are profound and can take a lifetime to grasp. Indeed, as the years in a single life of study pass, the subtlety of the sūtras is realized and so they remain a source of profound inspiration, even within our modern-day context. Rejuvenation Workshop I
Relaxation, Yoga, the philosophy of Yoga (Patanjali Yog Darshan)
A must for anyone interested in Yoga and it's philosophical essence. The philosophical verses of yoga (sūtras) are the perfect guides for both teacher and student of Yoga. OPEN TO ALL Sunday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 am- tLiving with Awareness

The workshop will begin with guided relaxation, leading into gentle meditative yoga postures and deep breathing. These techniques make it easier to meditate by providing us with a focused and peaceful state of mind with which we can explore meditation techniques. On July 16th we will explore the philosophical concepts of Yoga, Living with Awareness, according to the sage Patanjali.

We will begin with a selection of the most core verses of the Yoga Sūtras, from the 4 chapters. These verses will provide us with a solid outline for understanding the inspiring philosophy of Yoga, which is both subtle and pragmatic, demonstrating insights into the process of meditation. We will also address the concept of detachment (Vairaagya) according to Patanjali and its 4 levels. Detachment involves a maturity of awareness; something Patanjali develops through 4 distinct levels. Detachment is core to the development of inner strength; it helps us live with greater balance and awareness, Living with Awareness, according to Patanjali.

Rejuvenation Workshop II

On August 20th we will experiment with The 4 levels of Meditation, according to the sage Patanjali.

There are many varied approaches to meditation. Like various pieces of a puzzle, they can provide us with a complete vision of our own true nature. When meditating we often concentrate on a subject or a theme to provide us with focus and greater awareness. By providing 4 basic meditation techniques, we can develop concentration in a way that is accessible to all. We will explore these means and their profound results. This workshop is intended for anyone wishing to learn about basic meditation as well as provide existing meditators with the benefit of a group situation for a deeper experience and sharing.

METTA MEDITATION WORKSHOP
from 10 am to 4:30 pm
Offered by Lynne and Jürgen

For comments on our Metta workshop click here.

The basic principles of the Metta Meditation will be explained, an in-depth look at the potential of this meditation technique, with some experimentation. The traditional Buddhist compassion meditation is called Metta Bhaavanaa. “Bhaavanaa” means “cultivation”, or “experience” and Metta” means: “friendliness,” or “loving kindness.”

This workshop is open to all levels of participants, from very beginners to more experienced meditators. Expect a day of ease, laughter, and inspiration. We will introduce two basic levels of the Metta Meditation. We highly recommend this technique, it is easy, yet generates tangible effects. Benefits of this Meditation include a more focused mind, perspective, reduction of conflicts and difficulties, deeper connections with people surrounding us, and the development of friendliness, kindness and forgiveness. Thought this is a Buddhist Meditation Practice, we do not belong to any perticular spiritual group. We explore various techniques, experiment with them and love to share with others techniques that we find inspiring, easy to apply and very effective.

Workshop outline: 10 am: Rejuvenation yoga – stretches, gentle yoga postures, relaxation and a short meditation

11 am: Buddhist Compassion Meditation, introduction to the basics of meditation, overview; the first level of Metta Meditations will be explained and practiced.

Noon: Lunch time, time for some fresh air, there are coffee shops in the area that sell sandwiches - unless you wish to bring your own, we have a small dining room available.

1:00 pm: Introduction to the second level of Metta meditation and practice.

2:00: Group discussions on given topics related to the Metta practice. Sharing of results based on group discussions

"Philosophy Workshops"
offered by Lynne Cardinal and Jürgen Portz

The Yog Sūtras of Patanjali

Overview, selected verses, chanting of Sanskrit verses, meditation. A must for anyone interested in Yoga and it's philosophical essence. The sūtras are the perfect guides for both teacher and student of Yoga.

The philosophical system of Yoga finds its origin at the heart of oriental spiritual traditions in ancient times. Since then, we have often chanted mantras or Sanskrit verses called sūtras which attain a great part of their meaning in the vibration and consciousness which emanate from them. Yet, if we understand the principles expressed in these verses, our meditation deepens in insights and inspiration. The meaning, united with the rhythm and the sacred sounds of the sūtras, becomes an important tool for our own spiritual journey, as well as to deepen our meditations. Indeed, Patanjali is all about evolution and emancipation. We will chant the selected verses and meditate.

KINGSTON WORKSHOPS

At the Yoga and Relaxation Studio, Kingston, Ontario

PATANJALI YOG DARSHAN
Saturday from 1 to 5 pm

The 4 levels of Samaadhi (or Meditation)
We will teach the Yoga Sūtras related to Meditation (the Samaadhis); what obstacles found on the path of Meditation, and the process of purification. Chanting of related verses and Meditation experimentation according to the sūtras. Patanjali simplifies meditation, while providing us with tools to experiment with and understand the process of Meditation.
Sunday from 9:30 to 12:30

Some of the most important sūtras, overview
We will select amongst the most core verses of the Yog Sūtras, from the 4 Chapters, chant and Meditate. Those sūtras will provide us with a great outline for our own spiritual practice. Patanjali is both subtle and pragmatic, understanding the process of transformation, with clarity. We will address the concept of renunciation (Vairaagya) according to Patanjali and its 4 levels. Vairaagya or renunciation does not involve giving up relations nor employment, nor taking refuge in forests or monastery. It involves a maturity of awareness and Patanjali develops this through 4 distinct levels. A workshop offered by Lynne Cardinal and Jürgen Portz from the Kaivalya Centre, in Ottawa.
