FALL SESSION:

Meditation Classes / Integral Satsang

Lynne and Jürgen have a combined teaching experience of over 30 years.

Suitable to both beginners and experienced meditators.

For more information or to register call 613-721-7888 or 613-761-9642

An 8-week session, starting on September 14th to November 2nd, 2010 from 7:30 to 9:00 PM

Tuesday Group Meditation (Integral Satsang): Deep Breathing, Meditation techniques, the philosophy of meditation and Chanting from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.  Suitable to both beginners and experienced meditators.

Integral Satsang is a multi-faceted approach to spirituality and personal development offered in a group setting. An ideal class to learn more about meditation, including various meditation and breathing exercises as well as tools to deepen your meditation and develop regularity in your practice. In these classes, we teach various fundamental meditation techniques. The group classes are helpful for those who wish to develop regularity in their meditation practise and deepen their meditations and thus their understanding of deeper Truths. Meditation awakens in us a sense of focus and perspective, resulting in an overall feeling of well-being and peace of mind. During the classes, we will practise breathing exercises which are an important component of the practise of meditation. Breathing exercises affect the central nervous system, furthering the transformation to a more positive mind-frame enabling us to reach a finer state of consciousness. In addition, we use Sanskrit chanting as a method to relax and to create a calm, meditative atmosphere. Chanting has grown into a very popular technique which allows us to get in touch with ourselves, as the sounds are soothing and lead to meditation. Participants are encouraged to express and share their inner wisdom with the group.

Just a few of the many comments from  the people taking our meditation class:

"Regular meditation has dramatically improved the quality of my life. I enjoy every day more. I feel less affected by stress, and worry much less. I used to have difficulty sleeping quite often, but that rarely happens now. I feel more rested with fewer hours of sleep, and have more energy throughout the day." Brent Marshal, Nortel - March 2009

"Meditation is helping me cope with stress and to ground me. As a single mom with two teenagers, a young adult and a full time job, life is very busy. I find that since I have started meditating I see situations with more perspective and clarity." Bonnie Graham, Health Canada - March 2009

"Thank you for another awesome meditation class tonight. I sure left feeling calm, peaceful and strong." Anna Kemeny, Statistic Canada - March 2009

"As you have said all along, meditating every day makes a BIG difference. I go deeper sooner and am able to be more present during the rest of the day. In fact, on Wednesday I had a wonderful day with my Mom (meaning I didn't get stressed out at all).

For some reason I can't get myself together in the morning to do the meditation then, but evenings seem to work so I'm going with that for the time being. Also, it's nice to do it just before going to bed as it calms me down, puts me in a serene mood and makes me sleep well." January 2009

"The difference between a good week and a not so good week is based on whether I meditated that week. Meditation has provided me with the greatest stress management tool." December 2008

"I love the philosophy expressed in the classes, the variety, and it's many angles, allowing for a more practical understanding of mind, emotions, anxiety and focus." January 2009

If you wish to try a class or join us for the session, kindly contact us ASAP as space is limited and we require a minimum number of participants, call (613) 721-7888 or email: info@kaivalya.ca

Why meditation?

“MEDITATION NATION: It's not just New Age any more. Americans of all kinds are meditating to boost their immune systems and to reduce stress.” 1.

There are many meditation techniques, each having their value. But there are fundamental points that seem to hold for all techniques. It is often thought that to meditate your mind has to be still, quiet, like a vacuum, devoid of any thoughts or experiences. This will be very difficult as you can’t force the mind to be quiet. You have to let it stop by itself.  There is no need to struggle with the techniques. Simply apply them and gently allow the mind to stop by itself. Thoughts will come and go, but they won’t stay for very long. If you try to stop your thinking, it means that you are bothered by it. In its essence meditation encourages you to become a witness, an observer, allowing sounds to occur, thoughts to arise, to come and go, to sensations or images to arise, but they are just waves in your own mind. Learning to observe the mind is the first step, the most important part of meditation. To learn to observe dispassionately. Then to return to the technique, with an open and curious mind, applying efficient meditation techniques. When we persevere we reach a state that is calm, a state called “Big Mind”. This state of mind provides us with clarity and inner strength, with connecting with our true self.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sūtras and Ken Wilber’s Integral approach:
Two inspiring and practical philosophies

Why unite the ancient Yoga Sūtras with the contemporary insights of Ken Wilber? The brilliant Integral Framework developed by Ken Wilber serves as a practical way to enhance the Patanjali Yoga Sūtras. Ken provides us with a simple map of reality: the 4 perspectives of the quadrants (interior, exterior & individual, collective). Ken also explains the two basic types of Enlightenment: States and Stages. The states of consciousness experienced in meditation (perspective, calm, etc.) are themselves temporary and can be cultivated on a daily basis. On the other hand, the stages of consciousness are earned after some time in a regular meditation practice and create permanent transformations.

Our objective: through meditation we want to transform our mind from agitated to focused, from uneasy to easy, from unclear to clear. Both schools of thoughts complement each other in this regard.

The Patanjali Yog Sūtras are verses that contain the essence of Eastern Philosophy. Inspired by Sankhya Yog , an ancient school of logic, the Yog Sūtras provide us with a remarkable overview of Eastern Philosophy.

This overview enables us to gain a basic understanding of all other philosophical schools.

The sūtras (philosophical verses) contain profound thoughts that are clear, precise and inspiring. Thoughts that can be meditated on, and help us realize deep insights into the nature of mind and freedom.

After studying the sūtras, we can return years later and understand an even greater depth of meaning. In this way we can enhance our life and meditation practice. Sūtras are sentences that are short, but packed with wisdom.

This rich philosophical tradition is made accessible through a step-by-step system. We come to grasp the nature of mind, why we should meditate, what are the various states of meditation and what obstacles can potentially arise during our meditation practice. All of these captivating subjects will be discussed during our 15-week session. By the end of the session we will have covered all the main concepts expressed in the first chapter of the Patanjali Yog Sūtra as well as the pragmatic clarity that the Integral framework provides us with.

Join us for this unique exploration. This class will help you develop regularity in your meditation and help you derive clarity from your spiritual practice, all within an open and peaceful atmosphere.

NOTE: You can already register at 613.721.7888.

Where: PranaShanti, 52 Armstrong street, Ottawa
Teachers: Lynne Cardinal & Jürgen Portz
Topics for Discussion: Yoga Sūtras, Various Contemplative Practices; Ken Wilber's work & more.

NOTE: You will be welcomed to drop in once at the normal fee if you wish to try a class, after which you can decide if you wish to join the group for the rest of the session. For continuity sake, we require people to commit to the entire session. PAST METTA MEDITATION WORKSHOP

Offered by Lynne and Jürgen

For comments on our Metta workshop click here.

The basic principles of the Metta Meditation will be explained, an in-depth look at the potential of this meditation technique, with some experimentation. The traditional Buddhist compassion meditation is called Metta Bhaavanaa. “Bhaavanaa” means “cultivation”, or “experience” and Metta” means: “friendliness,” or “loving kindness.”

This workshop is open to all levels of participants, from very beginners to more experienced meditators. Expect a day of ease, laughter, and inspiration. We will introduce two basic levels of the Metta Meditation. We highly recommend this technique, it is easy, yet generates tangible effects.

Benefits of this Meditation include a more focused mind, perspective, reduction of conflicts and difficulties, deeper connections with people surrounding us, and the development of friendliness, kindness and forgiveness. Thought this is a Buddhist Meditation Practice, we do not belong to any perticular spiritual group. We explore various techniques, experiment with them and love to share with others techniques that we find inspiring, easy to apply and very effective.

Workshop outline:

10 am: Rejuvenation yoga – stretches, gentle yoga postures, relaxation and a short meditation

11 am: Buddhist Compassion Meditation, introduction to the basics of meditation, overview; the first level of Metta Meditations will be explained and practiced.

Noon: Lunch time, time for some fresh air, there are coffee shops in the area that sell sandwiches - unless you wish to bring your own, we have a small dining room available.

1:00 pm: Introduction to the second level of Metta meditation and practice.

2:00: Group discussions on given topics related to the Metta practice. Sharing of results based on group discussions

4:00 pm: Summary, conclusion

4:30 pm: End of workshop

Student Guidelines

Please come to class a little early to help you adjust from your busy day. You are welcomed to come earlier, to give you time to connect with your instructor, your friends, and yourself. Allow enough time to get settled in and relax a bit before class begins—such time can really help you have a more focused and rewarding experience. Late arrivals can be disruptive to the class, but if you are late, do come in and simply settle in quietly.

Make sure to share with your teacher any injuries or limitations before class so that we can offer you the best practice and advise for your current needs.

Try not to eat a large meal before class - a light snack is fine.

We believe that yoga is for everyone, not just for those who are already fit, flexible, or familiar with yoga’s more subtle teachings. We remind ourselves that our practice is so much more than the poses we do. As such, approach your yoga with a non-competitive mind and a willing heart and see what happens.

Try to attend only the classes that are suited to your health and ability. Honour your guests as well by bringing them to appropriate classes when it applies. Remember to "Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are." Rest sometimes.

Finally, be kind and loving to yourself by respecting where you are at any given time, even if it changes dramatically from class to class. Practice regularly and with devotion, yoga inspires us to accept all that we are.

* The Yog Sūtras of Patanjali

Overview, selected verses, chanting of Sanskrit verses, meditation. A must for anyone interested in Yoga and it's philosophical essence. The sūtras are the perfect guides for both teacher and student of Yoga.

The philosophical system of Yoga finds its origin at the heart of oriental spiritual traditions in ancient times. Since then, we have often chanted mantras or Sanskrit verses called sūtras which attain a great part of their meaning in the vibration and consciousness which emanate from them. Yet, if we understand the principles expressed in these verses, our meditation deepens in insights and inspiration. The meaning, united with the rhythm and the sacred sounds of the sūtras, becomes an important tool for our own spiritual journey, as well as to deepen our meditations. Indeed, Patanjali is all about evolution and emancipation.

Some of the most important sūtras, overview

We will select some of the key verses of the Yog Sūtras, from the 4 Chapters, chant them in Sanskrit and meditate. Those sūtras will provide us with a great outline for our own spiritual practice. Patanjali is both subtle and pragmatic, understanding clearly the process of transformation.

Detachment and Non-judgemental Awareness

We will address the concept of detachment and disillusionment (Vairaagya) according to Patanjali and its 4 levels. Vairaagya does not involve giving up relations nor employment, nor taking refuge in forests or monastery. It involves a maturity of awareness and Patanjali develops this through 4 distinct levels. Vairaagya refers to a consciousness that has been transformed into a non-judgmental state. We will discuss the ways to reach a non-judgmental state of consciousness and the practicality and subtlety of this state and it’s benefits.

We will chant the selected verses and meditate.

TOP

* The Upanishads

On the Mahaa Vakyas (great sentences used in meditation) Mantras and Chanting. Ideal for understanding the deeper part of meditation (analytical)

The basic teachings of the Upanishads are summed up in six great sayings (Mahaa Vakyas).

These are essential tools to understand the basic philosophy of meditation. This workshop is meant to be accessible to all; in a relaxed atmosphere we will discuss the 6 great sayings and their meaning, and how they are applicable to us.

Those great sayings provide us with clarity; it is with a clear mind that we find our truth, at the heart of our consciousness. It has been said that we have a wealth of knowledge within us and the Mahaa Vakyas are pointers that lead to that truth. We will learn to go beyond the conditioned mind and shift our level of perceptions to more truthful ones. Meditation on the Mahaa Vakyas lead to clarity and greater awareness.

We will sing the Mahaa Vakyas and learn how to meditate on them. Join us for a blissful afternoon of chants, philosophy and meditation on great ancient sayings.

*The Bhagavad Gīta

Overview, selected verses, and chanting of the Gīta verses (in Sanskrit), meditation. We will select verses on Karma, or the creation of destiny according the Sage Vyaas, author of the Gīta.

Shrimad Bhagavad Gīta (meaning, literally, "The Celestial song") is regarded as the teachings of ancient prophets and explains the ancient scriptures.

The Gīta helps us discover the purpose of human life, elaborating on very practical Truths and on Self-awareness.

The Gīta has a unique flavor, to sing its verses awakens an ancient dimension, and the simplicity of its messages makes it easy to remember them and assimilate them. Yet with it’s simplicity we find such depth that we can remain inspired by the Gīta for an entire life and still discover hidden meanings and learn how to integrate them in our life.

Join us for a wonderful afternoon on the Bhagavad Gīta; we will sing selected verses on Karm Yog, the wisdom in action.

We will address the power of desires and how to tackle them. In this workshop we will learn practical tools that will help us in our meditation and in our daily life.

Patanjali simplifies meditation, while providing us with tools to experiment with and understand the process of Meditation.

Some of the most important sūtras, overview

We will select amongst the most core verses of the Yog Sūtras, from the 4 Chapters, chant and Meditate. Those sūtras will provide us with a great outline for our own spiritual practice. Patanjali is both subtle and pragmatic, understanding the process of transformation, with clarity. We will address the concept of renunciation (Vairaagya) according to Patanjali and its 4 levels. Vairaagya or renunciation does not involve giving up relations nor employment, nor taking refuge in forests or monastery. It involves a maturity of awareness and Patanjali develops this through 4 distinct levels.

A workshop offered by Lynne Cardinal and Jürgen Portz from the Kaivalya Centre, in Ottawa.
